In 2023, Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven celebrates its 20th Anniversary. It all starts with death. COMPETING WITH TWENTY YEARS
There is twenty years of visual cookies that comes with The Five People You Meet in Heaven. The mission here was to create a design that was elevated and reminded individuals how special the book is. Strategically, it had to be recognizable and comfortable for the Mitch Albom fans and fit into his established brand and design system.
I sought inspiration from the theme of the book: searching. On the front cover is a pseudo word puzzle made from old and new iconography. I pulled a quote from the book as an instruction for the puzzle and lead in. Aesthetically, I wanted a book that you can judge by its cover.
TYPE, ILLUSTRATION, PALETTE
BuenaParkJF Regular is the main workhorse typeface. They're the typeface lends itself well to the amusement park setting of the book, while also being rooted in sophistication.
The illustrations used throughout and pulled for pins clue readers in on what is to come in the book. The ferris wheel was borrowed from the original edition of the book.
In addition, the color palette was pulled from the original cover to seamlessly fit the Albom brand and not jar consumers.
